Member’s Statement – The New Energy Economy – May 14, 2015

Mr. Speaker, day after day we are informed of new cuts to programs, services, and jobs in an effort to bring our fiscal house into order. Day after day members of this house sit here and consider the impact that these cuts will have. Day after day I receive e-mails, phone calls and walk-in visits from constituents looking for jobs or social support mechanisms that no longer exist.

Mr. Speaker this does not have to be the way. There are solutions to our economic challenges and there are ways to stimulate a sustainable economy. The new energy economy is one area where others in Canada are having success. Efficiency Nova Scotia has released its annual report and through energy efficiency initiatives employs 1200 full time workers across the province. In addition, through energy efficiency measures, they will save the people of Nova Scotia $99 million in electricity costs. Let us look to Nova Scotia as an example of the economic potential of the new energy economy and let us consider implementing such a program here.

Thank you Mr. Speaker
