Hospice House

Photo David Hospice HoouseOn June 8, David had the opportunity to tour Hospice House; the first facility of its kind in Fredericton.  Located on Churchill Row, Hospice House will be a 10 bed residential facility for terminally ill patients. Hospice House will work closely with the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital to identify patients in need of a comfortable, homey environment to provide end of life care.  This service will fill an important gap in the health care continuum and reduce health care costs associated with palliative care.

Hospice House is making use of innovative ideas to de-institutionalize the facility and create a sustainable social enterprise.  The second floor of Hospice House will have rooms available for paying overnight guests visiting loved ones in the House or the hospital. The rooms will be cheaper than hotel rooms, providing both a revenue source for the property and a service to patients and their families. There are also plans in the works to create an adult day care centre.

This initiative wouldn’t be possible without the kindness and generosity of its donors.  Hospice House has almost met its fundraising goal, having raised close to $3 million. There are lots of ways to contribute to the project. One church donated its stained glass windows for the property.
