David Coon calls on Minister of Social Development to Reverse Claw-back on Low-Income Seniors

Fredericton – As the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty occurs on Saturday, David Coon, MLA for Fredericton South and Leader of the Green Party of New Brunswick, is calling on the Minister of Social Development to eliminate the practice of clawing back extra income from seniors living in subsidized housing.

“Seniors living in poverty struggle to purchase the basic necessities of life, including nutritious food and transportation,” said Coon. “When they manage to earn a little money on top of their pensions, they shouldn’t have to turn over 30% of their earnings to the Department of Social Development.”

“This claw-back is unfair,” said Coon. “The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is the perfect day for the Minister to eliminate this policy.”
