Statement by the Green Party Leader on Labour Day

Fredericton – David Coon, Leader of the Green Party of New Brunswick and MLA for Fredericton South made the following statement in recognition of Labour Day:

“This Labour Day I will be serving up hot dogs at the Fredericton Labour Day Picnic in Officer’s Square on Monday afternoon, as I have for the past several years. It is a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the labour movement. But much remains to be done.

Many lower income New Brunswickers, particularly those working in the service sector, remain unrepresented by unions and therefore do not share in the benefits of unionization – low wages being the most obvious consequence.

When the Legislature resumes in October I will be tabling first contract legislation to ensure that workers in newly unionized workplaces will be able to secure a contract in a timely manner. If adopted, this legislation will ultimately lead to increased wages and better working conditions for low income New Brunswickers.”
