Member’s Statement: Evelyn Grove Manor – 10 February 2016
Mr. Speaker, I would like to speak to the responsibility of government to meet the needs of the people that depend on it. A prime example in my riding is the government-owned low income seniors apartment, Evelyn Grove Manor. Due to budget cuts, the residents have lost the services of a building superintendant, their lifeline alarms and a night time security guard. They are now without the support they need to feel comfortable in their homes. Despite these reductions in service, residents’ rents go up each time their CPP or old age supplement is adjusted. They are seeing their rents increase at the same time as their services are being reduced., which causes them no end of anxiety. As their landlord, government needs to live up to its responsibility and provide them with the services they need to live well.
