National Aboriginal Day

For Immediate Release

Fredericton – Sunday, June 21, 2015, National Aboriginal Day, comes on the heels of the report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

“As we celebrate and honour First Nations peoples, let us also remember the impact of the residential schools on these peoples,” said David Coon, MLA Fredericton South and Leader of the Green Party of New Brunswick.

On June 14, the government of New Brunswick issued a statement committing to respond to this report and work to repair and rebuild its relationship with First Nations.

“This report identifies several calls to action which point us toward reconciliation with our First Nations neighbours,” said Coon. “Let’s implement these calls to action, starting with the recommendation to adopt and implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous peoples in New Brunswick.”
