Coon happy with P.E.I. Green win Provincial Journal  TJ – May 6, 2015

PEIFREDERICTON • Prince Edward Island elected its first Green party MLA in Monday’s provincial election, following in the footsteps of New Brunswick this past September. New Brunswick party leader and Fredericton South MLA David Coon said Peter Bevan-Baker’s election in the riding of Kellys Cross–Cumberland will change the tone of P.E.I. politics.“It was great to see the tradition of Green candidates successfully taking a riding and beating out the incumbent cabinet minister, which has now happened every time,” Coon said. All four Green party candidates who have been elected to provincial or federal governments have beaten out cabinet ministers. In addition to Coon and Bevan-Baker, British Columbia has elected a Green MLA in Andrew Weaver and a Green MP in federal party leader Elizabeth May. Coon said his win last fall likely helped send a message that it’s possible for a Green party candidate to get elected.
