Member’s Statement – Autism
Mr. Speaker, the number of children diagnosed with autism every year is on the rise. Current estimates indicate that 1 in 68 children are affected. These children and their families are currently without government funded mental health support to address the anxiety and depression symptoms of autism. Many of these children grow into adults who are forced to live in nursing homes because our system lacks support for people within this community. Yesterday I tabled a petition of 90 names and referenced an electronic petition of 696 caregivers, family and friends of loved ones with autism. This government must take these concerns seriously and they must take action to address them.
