10 Year Education Plan Public Meetings hosted by David Coon – FHS Student Engagement
On February 15, 2016, David Coon met with students at Fredericton High School to get feedback and input on the 10 year education plan proposed by the provincial government. David spoke with the student representative council (SRC), who made some great points as to what the plan should include and what its focus should be.
The grade 11 and 12 students at Fredericton High School had several ideas to contribute.
Many students voiced that they would like to see more mental health awareness in the school system and that it should be introduced into the curriculum in elementary school rather than in middle and high school.
There was also strong consensus to strengthen and diversify the personal development unit by increasing time spent on sexual health education, practical skills such as filing taxes, and topics that increase community involvement such as civics.
The students also indicated a desire to place more emphasis on ethics such as social responsibility and hard work as learning outcomes.
It was clear that the students at Fredericton High School feel strongly about their education and want to see improvements to the public education system. The students engaged in a great discussion that David will be able to include in his contribution to the development of the province’s 10 year education plan.
