World Earth Day: Time for Climate Action
Fredericton – In recognition of World Earth Day on Friday, April 22, David Coon, MLA for Fredericton South and Leader of the Green Party of New Brunswick would like to see the Select Committee on Climate Change commence its work.
“On Earth Day, Prime Minister Trudeau will be in New York to sign the Paris Agreement, committing Canada to do its part to avoid 2 degrees warming,” said Coon. “If New Brunswick is to do its fair share to reduce fossil fuel use, we must begin to act. To do that, our Select Committee must begin its work now.”
The Select Committee on Climate Change was announced on April 8th and has been tasked with conducting public consultations to help develop recommendations on climate action for New Brunswick. Coon is a member of the Select Committee.
“We know that our high level of fossil fuel consumption is the principal cause of the growing crisis with the world’s climate. New Brunswick has already sustained tens of millions of dollars of damage to our roads and bridges as a result of the rapidly changing climate,” said Coon. “I hope the Select Committee on Climate Change meets soon, so that our recommendations will be available to the Premier in time for the First Ministers’ Climate Summit in October.”
