Open Letter to Minister Landry: Gender Identity as a Human Right

May 19, 2016

Hon. Francine Landry
Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour
P.O. Box 6000
Fredericton, NB

cc. M. Marc-Allain Mallet

Dear Minister Landry:

I recently became aware that the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission is in the process of an internal review of the New Brunswick Human Rights Act. This is great news considering the Act has not been reviewed since 2009.

I ask that in any amendment proposed, ‘gender identity’ and ‘gender expression’ are explicitly included as protected grounds from discrimination.

On Tuesday, May 17th, federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould tabled Bill C-16, to incorporate ‘gender identity’ and ‘gender expression’ in the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code of Canada to protect federal employees from discrimination. We need to amend New Brunswick’s Human Rights Act to protect transgendered New Brunswickers from discrimination.

Sincerely,

David Coon,
MLA, Fredericton South
Leader, Green Party of New Brunswick
