Mr. Speaker, this government, like governments before it has tabled a blizzard of bills at the end of the session. The difference is this government committed to creating a more effective Legislature. Standing committees were created specifically so they can receive more thorough and specialized examination by private members. First, this government broke its election promise to provide non-partisan research services to MLAs to help us be more effective in committees, when it cut the single legislative research position. Yesterday, it tabled 10 bills, with more to come. Mr. Speaker this makes a mockery of the government’s commitment to create a more effective legislature, as there is neither the time nor the capacity to carry out the more thorough and specialized examination of bills the committees are mandated to provide. Mr. Speaker it is time the Premier make a serious commitment to shift some power from the Executive Council back to this Legislative Assembly.
