International Day of the Midwife: Time for Government to Deliver

Fredericton – David Coon, Leader of the Green Party of New Brunswick and MLA for Fredericton South, urges Health Minister Victor Boudreau to push through the pain and deliver on his commitment to establish a pilot project to integrate midwives into our healthcare system, sooner than later.

In 2008, former Health Minister Mike Murphy promised the first group of eight publicly funded midwives would be hired in 2009, and then an additional four midwives would be hired every year to meet the needs across the province.

“It’s 2016. Women and families have been waiting a long time to be able to call the midwife to provide the continuity of excellent care before birth, during birth and after birth that midwifery delivers,” said Coon. “May 5th is International Day of the Midwife and I look forward to attending the Families for Midwives Annual General Meeting.”
